(Click this to see what I mean about Garfield.)Īs you can see from the above assortment of Japanese and Western box art, as time went on, Kirby’s arms became rounder and his eyes bigger and friendlier.

Throughout two decades of evolution from placeholder graphic to one of Nintendo’s cutest mascots, Kirby has gone through what I like to call the “Garfield effect” – meaning that just like Jim Davis’ fat feline from the comic strips, Kirby’s modern incarnation looks quite different from his original form. Originally, Kirby’s simple, spherical sprite was only a placeholder graphic when the game was still in its testing stages, but Sakurai ended up making Kirby the star after he decided that the little guy was perfect for the role. Kirby was originally created by Nintendo designer Masahiro Sakurai around 1992, and he wasn’t even intended to be the main character in what would later become his first game, Kirby’s Dream Land. So this time, it’s only proper that we take a closer look at the protector of Dream Land, who is described in his official Nintendo bio as a “jolly fellow” who “loves to eat, dance, defeat enemies, play and sleep – especially during the day.” (His hobbies are fantastic!) Last post, I mentioned my fondness for Kirby and touched on why his games are excellent choices for playing with a significant other.
